Estimating Shingle Coverage and Pitch Multipliers
Roofing materials are bought and measured in squares. One roofing square equals exactly 100 square feet of roof surface. Standard asphalt shingles, whether 3-tab or architectural, are packaged so that 3 bundles cover 1 square. Estimating a re-roof requires determining the sloped surface area, accounting for pitch, and applying a waste factor.
Calculate Sloped Roof Area
Roof pitch increases the total surface area compared to the flat building footprint. To find the true surface area, multiply your ground footprint area by the pitch multiplier that matches your roof slope.
- Flat Area (sq ft) = Length (ft) × Width (ft)
- Sloped Area (sq ft) = Flat Area (sq ft) × Pitch Multiplier
- Total Area with Waste (sq ft) = Sloped Area × (1 + Waste Factor %)
Convert Area to Squares and Bundles
Once you have the total adjusted surface area, convert square footage into roofing squares and then into individual shingle bundles.
- Roof Squares = Total Area with Waste (sq ft) ÷ 100
- Shingle Bundles = Roof Squares × 3
Worked Calculation Example
Consider a standard home with a 30 ft × 40 ft building footprint (1,200 sq ft flat area), a 6/12 roof pitch, and a standard 10% waste factor:
- Step 1 (Slope Adjustment): A 6/12 pitch has a multiplier of 1.118. Sloped Area = 1,200 × 1.118 = 1,341.6 sq ft.
- Step 2 (Waste Inclusion): Apply 10% waste: 1,341.6 × 1.10 = 1,475.76 sq ft.
- Step 3 (Roof Squares): 1,475.76 ÷ 100 = 14.76 squares. Round up to 15 squares.
- Step 4 (Bundles): 15 squares × 3 bundles = 45 total shingle bundles.
